Worldly and World Transcending Paths: Huaotou Chan Practice. 

In this Retreat Venerable Guo Goang will provide an introduction into the Huatou method as it relates to the worldly and world transcending paths of Chan Buddhism. This retreat will be for both, beginners and advanced practitioners.


Fri:   6:00 PM – 9:00 PM Retreat, Part I

Sat:  9:00 AM – 9:00 PM  Retreat, Part II (vegetarian lunch and light dinner will be served.)

Sun: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM  Retreat, Part III (vegetarian lunch will be served.)

          5:30 PM – 6:30 PM  Taking Refuge Ceremony  (please fill out application form and email it to Iris ahead of time.)


Taking Refuge Ceremony:

On Sunday afternoon, the Venerable will hold a “Taking Refugee in the Three Jewels” ceremony.  If you would like to take refuge, receive a Dharma name and thereby formally become a Buddhist then please fill out this online registration form and email it to Iris Wang a few days before the retreat in order to grant Iris and the Venerable enough time to make the necessary arrangements and to select a Dharma name for you.  Thank you!


About the Teacher:  Venerable Guo-Goang

Venerable Guo Goang was ordained in 1990 and received Dharma transmission from Chan Master Sheng Yen in 2005.  She went for a solitary retreat in 2013 and returned to Dharma Drum Mountain as the Deputy Abbot in 2019. She currently is a senior teacher at the Chan Meditation Center, New York City.

Check-in on Fri begins at 5:30 p.m,  check-in on  Sat and Sun begins at 8:30 a.m.


Shoes are not allowed inside of the Chan Hall (but can remain in the lobby, of course). For your comfort, we recommend loose, comfortable clothing and clean socks. We advise no jewelry (wedding bands are fine) or constricting stockings. You may remove your socks during the meditation sessions; meditations are traditionally done barefoot.

Please be mindful that the retreat is a scent-free event and avoid the use of perfume and/or cologne the day of retreat.

The center is located in a warehouse district. When you turn onto Holbrook Drive from Wheeling Road, our building will be on your right-hand side. Please drive into the parking lot and continue toward the back of the building where you will find plenty of parking.
