The Fingers Pointing to the Moon: From the Shurangama Sutra to Chan Practice & Taking the Refuge Ceremony.
This retreat will provide an introduction to the main tenets of the Shurangama sutra and also explain the implications for various Chan meditation methods, illuminating the aspects of subject and object as explained in the sutra.
Schedule:
Fri: 6 PM – 9 PM Retreat, Part I
Sat: 9 AM – 9 PM Retreat, Part II (vegetarian lunch and light dinner will be served.)
Sun: 9 AM – 5 PM Retreat, Part III (vegetarian lunch will be served.)
Sun: 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM Taking Refuge Ceremony.
On Sunday afternoon, Venerable Guo Xing Fashi will hold a “Taking Refugee in the Three Jewels” ceremony. If you would like to take refuge, receive a Dharma name and thereby formally become a Buddhist then please fill out this online registration form and email it to Iris Wang a few days before the retreat in order to grant Iris and the Venerable enough time to make the necessary arrangements. About Ven. Guo-Xing:
Venerable Guo-Xing, currently is the director of the Chan Department at DDM Taiwan. Ordained under Chan Master Sheng-Yen in 1986 he assisted the Master and lead more than 50 meditation retreats in Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and the United States. Formerly serving 8 years as the abbot of the Chan Meditation Center and Dharma Drum Retreat Center in New York, Venerable Guo-Xing was among the twelve monastics who received Dharma transmission in 2005 from the late Chan Master Sheng-Yen.
Registration
To register and reserve a spot at the retreat please scroll down and click on the “Register” button below which will ask you to fill out a form with your contact information. The suggested donation to attend the entire retreat is $60 that you can adjust to any amount as you wish ($30 for Sat, $30 for Sun, and Fri free).
Since the seating is limited it is recommended to register as early as possible! The registration includes a vegetarian lunch on Saturday and Sunday, and light dinner on Saturday. If you are vegan please let us know. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend Guo Xing Fashi’s retreat and scholarships are available if money is tight.
There will be a period of “mindful work practice” during the breaks after lunch. Roles will be assigned at the check in.

Etiquette
Shoes are not allowed inside of the Chan Hall (but can remain in the lobby, of course). For your comfort, we recommend loose, comfortable clothing and clean socks. We advise no jewelry (wedding bands are fine) or constricting stockings. You may remove your socks during the meditation sessions; meditations are traditionally done barefoot.
Please be mindful that the retreat is a scent-free event and avoid the use of perfume and/or cologne the day of retreat.

The center is located in a warehouse district. When you turn onto Holbrook Drive from Wheeling Road, our building will be on your right-hand side. Please drive into the parking lot and continue toward the back of the building where you will find plenty of parking.
