Our beloved teacher, Master Sheng Yen, passed away on the lunar calendar day of January 9, 2009. To remember him, and to continue spreading the teaching of Chinese Buddhism and DDM’s vision, the Sangha of Dharma Drum Mountain has designated the day of our teacher’s passing as “Dharma Drum Day of Passing on the Lamp of Wisdom”.
As Master Sheng Yen once said, to realize DDM’s vision of “uplifting the human character and building a pure land on earth” would be to memorize him. Not expecting any gratitude from his students, his sole wish was for everyone to become a lamp of wisdom.
“Passing on the lamp of wisdom” means to transmit the teachings, i.e. the teaching that Master Sheng Yen inherited from Shakyamuni Buddha and generations of Chan masters, and that he experienced and practiced in his life, which manifest as wisdom and compassion and that are embodied in DDM’s spirit and vision. The lamp symbolizes the continuation of the Dharma, the light of wisdom, and the light that cuts through the fog of vexations and illuminates the path of delivering sentient beings and realizing Buddha-nature. One lamp can light up another lamp, and another one, on and on, without end.
Activity Includes: watching the video recordings of “Dharma Drum Mountain Passing on the Lamp of Wisdom: The Three Vows of Master Sheng Yen”, “Dharma Drum Mountain Passing on the Lamp of Wisdom: Thus Have I Vowed”.
