Dharma Drum Passing the Lamp Ceremony.

Sunday, February  2   11:00 AM – 12:30 PM

Potluck Lunch 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM

Our beloved teacher Master Shengyen passed away on the lunar calendar day of February 3rd in 2009. To remember him, and to continue spreading the teaching of Chinese Buddhism and DDM’s vision, the sangha of Dharma Drum Mountain has designated the day of our teacher’s passing as “Dharma Drum Day of Passing the Lamp”.

Master Shengyen has said, To realize the DDM vision of “uplifting human character and building a pure land in the human world” is to memorialize him. He did not wish for the gratitude from his students, but his only wish is that everyone becomes a lamp.

The meaning of passing the lamp is to pass the teaching – the teaching that Master Shengyen inherited from Shakyamuni Buddha and generations of Chan masters, and that he experienced and practiced with his life, which is manifested as wisdom and compassion and embodied in the spirit and vision of DDM. The lamp symbolizes the continuation of Dharma Wisdom, the light of wisdom, and the light that cuts through the fog of vexations and illuminates the path of delivering sentient beings and accomplishing Buddhahood. One lamp can light up the next lamp, and the next again; on and on, without end.
