The Chan Workshop is a group practice focusing on both meditation and Chan Dharma study. Established in 2003 by Chicago’s DDMBA branch founder and resident teacher Iris Wang, the practice is held Sunday mornings from 8:30–11:30 a.m. and is conducted as outlined by DDM founder Master Sheng Yen in his book Zen Wisdom. The text discusses the importance of group practice for a practitioner to progress safely through one’s meditation experience.

The DDM lineage teaches “equal importance of doctrine and cultivation, or theory and practice”. Therefore, Dharma study follows our weekly meditation practice.

Chan Workshop schedule:

  • 08:30am – 09:00am : Eight Form Moving Meditation
  • 09:00am – 09:45am : Sitting Meditation
  • 09:45am – 10:00am : Morning Service
  • 10:00am – 11:30am : Book Study
  • 11:30am – 12:30pm : Lunch Social

About the Instructor

Iris Wang started her meditation practice and took refuge with Master Sheng Yen in 1992. She founded the Dharma Drum Buddhist Association Chicago Chapter in 1993, became its first president, and served in that role until 2002. Ms. Wang participated in ten intensive meditation retreats with Master Sheng Yen at the Dharma Drum Retreat Center in New York and four Dharma retreats at the Bodhi Monastery in New Jersey. In addition, from 1998 until his passing, Ms. Wang served as publisher of Master Sheng Yen’s books, publishing important titles such as There is No Suffering—a commentary on Heart Sutra 2nd edition, and Orthodox Chinese Buddhism.

In 2003, Iris obtained her meditation teacher certificate. She leads Sunday morning meditation and lectures on the Dharma at Chan Hall in Wheeling, IL—home of the Chicago Chapter of Dharma Drum Buddhist Association Chicago Chapter.

In 2018, Iris Wang was elected vice president of Dharma Drum Buddhist Association Chicago Chapter and, in 2019, President.
