Venerable Guo Yuan, Abbot of DDM RC, NY.

Recorded in the Agamas, remembrance of Buddha’s merit is a method of Chan practice that Buddha taught his disciples. Later, this method developed into two methods: 1) to silently remember Buddha’s merits, or 2) to chant Buddha’s name. Advocated by Master Sheng Yen in his later years, Chan chanting practice, which utilizes sound to help relax and focus, has been a great alternative approach to reach the unification of body and mind.

On the first day of the retreat, Venerable Guo Yuan will lead a day of Chan chanting meditation for practitioners to experience the unification of body and mind. The second day of the retreat will consist of sitting meditation combined with walking and standing meditation for practitioners to learn how to practice Chan in daily life utilizing different postures to relax body and mind.

Venerable Guo Yuan is one of Darma Drum Mountain’s founders and Master Sheng Yen’s Dharma heir. He has closely followed the footsteps of Master Sheng Yen for many years and has led Chan retreats in many countries around the world. He is fluent in Chinese, English, and Vietnamese and has extensive experience teaching Chan in various languages.

(Please note: This retreat consists of two days of Chan meditation from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. This is not an overnight retreat. Registration fee includes a vegan lunch both days.)
